Nikon D3x SLR Update

If there's one thing for certain, Nikon is full of surprises! With the D3 JUST announced, the flood gates of speculation have opened, and the water is at eye level. I don't think Nikon could have picked a better time to announce their newest flagship camera, with it's full frame sensor! Hot on the heels of Canon's release of the 1Ds Mark III, Nikon was not going to be caught with its pants down and they leapt to the call with a 12.1 full frame D3...

Wait, what? Did I just reverse the '1' and the '2' in that pixel count? Surely it must be '21MP', no? No! The camera Nikon chose to debut its Full Frame sensor on is the sport shooter/journalist's dream machine. With 12.1MP, it has upped the last generation's camera, the D2h, but a whopping 8megapixels! The D3 no doubt seems like a replacement for the D2h, however, it could very well be just the first in a series of D3, D3h and D3x machines, with the D3x being their true flagship camera.

With Canon already showing their cards with the 1Ds Mark III, Nikon's job has become that much easier. They now know what to put their sites on when developing the D3x and can meet, exceed or just totally blow away the 1Ds.

So just what might Nikon come to market with? Well, if I was a gambling person, I'd say for sure it will be > 20 MP. If I had to put an exact number on it, I'd say 24megapixels. If I had to choose an over/under, I'd put it right at 20Megapixels, with 18 on the low side and 26 on the high side. Of course FPS won't be as high as the D3/D3h, but that is to be expected when you're talking about having to process so much data. As it is now, the 1Ds is processing about 150MB/s which rivals most optimized servers.

What else can Nikon bring to the table with the D3x? Could they possible cram more than the 920,000 pixels they already display on their 3" LCD screen? At this point, I think I would not be surpised if they introduced the first ever 3" HDTV LCD screen ;). Just how many megapixels will the D3x camera have?

Nikon would have been wise to annouce this was coming earlier and at $8,000 one could buy a Canon Mark II 5D and several lenses - which I have. I will continue to shoot with Nikon gear, but the D3x is priced a bit high and does not offer HD video - big mistake if you ask me. I may purchase the camera, but it's the HD 1080 video that would be nice to see added in. Also I have found that Adobe photoshop will not enlarge the RAW files from the Canon or Nikon cameras larger then 25 Megapizels in Camera RAW not sure why the limitation, but hope the D3X does not have it as I need to make very large prints for some of my clients.
If Nikon adds HD video and a microphone jack to this camera - I will put it on my must have list of equipment.

Most of what I shoot is with wide angle lenses (the Nikon 17-55 is pretty much glued to my camera). The Nikon 12-24 also gets a lot of use, and between those two there's quite a bit of money involved.

I'm not knocking the FX sensor, I think it's a logical progression, I'm just saying I want my cake and to eat it too...and then take a photo of the empty plate...

Jason 34, I dont understand what your dx lenses has to do with any of it. You will still have 12 megapixel image results. You're still getting the exact same image results that you would out of any of their previous models.

Well, 26 megapixels wasn't too far off. Pretty amazing when you consider it was 4 years ago 4MP was considered big news. I own a Nikon D2h, so I'll stick with the DX but this one is tempting me. Nikon D3x would be killer if I wasn't so invested in DX lenses.

they got 60mgp why cant nikon do that , it would just he a smaller size . that would be out of this world . it already exists . canon's gun would just go poop !

i love my d3 . we , all of us have many nikon lenses . the d3 allows the use of these . i always use a hand mtr with the f5 it gives the most control comparing highlight to shadow with the defused . yet the d3 does a great job . sony already came out with a 24.5 mgp so nikon should stay on top with a 35 mgp . science says you san do that . now we could have a hoselblod with a great awry of lenses . none might need to do better than that . metal film technology will get them there .

So what you think now... Sony alpha 900 @ 24.6 MP, 921 3" View, dual processors, 100% viewfinder and @ $2,999 (same price as Nikon D700)

Nikon will surely outdo Canon's 1Ds with it's D3x or the like. Yes, they have a challenge on their hands to continue to built better, faster and affordable DSLRs that rival Canon.

But, thank God. Competition has been a blessing for the consumer - us.

As these DSLRs continue to have higher MPs
will our computers be able to keep pace?
Vista is hard enough on the hardware - add
Photoshop CS3 and these large photo files and
what a challenge and expense it will be.

The only way I would own a Nikon D3x or Canon 1Ds would be if I won it. I wish I could afford it. For those in the business or deep enough pockets with a photography hobby either camera would be a must have.

One of my co-workers was able to get a Nikon D80 for her work camera then bought one to have has her personal camera. Fan"freakin'"tastic photos. Nikon is tops for a reason.

I will be on the lookout for Nikon's announcement of a >20mp dslr. It is sure to be everything we expect of them but - probably even better.

26Mp would be a silly thing to do - too much diffraction limitation, too much noise and too strong an AA filter a la D300.

18-21Mp would suit me just fine, with all the refinements of the D3 that would just give Canon something to think about.

I also believe that an "FX version of the D300 is in the offing, using the D3 sensor (or similar)From my "sources", I believe the new model will be designated "D10". Release is anticipated later this year.

The D3X should deliver a "knockout punch" to the CANON 1 DS MkIII... Expect "DX3s" to be released sometime in 2009...

@ 26Megapixels, you are deep into the RANGE of medium format. I made the switch from Nikons to Canons a few years ago when the best they had to offer was the D2h but I've always missed the Nikon glass and the Nikon look to photos. With the release of the D3 I've already told my wife my Canon gear is going on eBay, and that D3 will be mine. Couple it with the new 24-70mm lense and you have an almost perfect setup.

If only I had a reason to setup a network of cameras with the WT-4 ;). Speaking of wireless, I must say, Canon's wireless system, while it doesn't intregrate as well into the body of the camera, I do like how you can attach a longer cable to it and put it on your belt. These cameras aren't getting any lighter, and I'm not getting any younger...
